A Little Botox

Standard

Our siding is scheduled to start tomorrow – a little dose of botox for the exterior. YAY! Will it actually happen? I am a little skeptical since we are supposed to have a big storm coming in and it is supposed to get cold again. So, we’ll see! I’m actually not too anxious for it to start…I guess having the outside of the house looking all sketchy doesn’t really bother me!

So, lets remember what we started with and how far we’ve come.

The very first time we came out.

After we took possession.

2

Starting deconstruction.

3

New windows (except basement), garage doors, front door, replaced buffalo board sheathing with plywood.

4

What it looks like today.

5

My guestimation on what our wonderful house will look like after the facelift.

I’m still unsure on the front door color, and we aren’t 100% sure on if we are going with stone or brick, but you get the general idea! We’ll also be getting a new roof at some point… It’s going to be good looking isn’t it? Quite the little facelift we are giving this little country house!

Calling the Stove Black

Standard

How does that saying go? Something about the pot calling the kettle black?  Well, the thing that I am going to call black isn’t a pot or a kettle, its a stove!

Hubby and I went out yesterday and looked at fireplaces. Somewhere in the process, we decided that instead of doing a wood burning fireplace downstairs, we are going to do a wood burning stove! So far, this is our favorite. I’m not sure if we would get it with the silver accents or just get it all black. Either way, what do you think?

stove

I’m not really sure how we came to the decision to do a stove instead of a fireplace. I hadn’t even thought about it, but hubby wanted to take a look at them and once we started looking, I was really feeling it! I love the idea of doing something a little different and straying from the norm.

Now originally we had decided that we weren’t going to do a fireplace downstairs, but after spending some time thinking about it in the warmth of my parent’s downstairs wood burning fireplace, we weren’t 100% sure on that decision. What we decided was that we wouldn’t regret putting one in, but we might regret not putting one in. So we decided to do it!

Now, why the sudden decision making? Well, a wood burning stove needs a chimney! And since the siding people will be starting this month (YAY!!!!!) we had to decide NOW what we were going to do.

So, along with that, we are trying to decide what we want to do – brick or stone for the accents? (The siding will be a charcoal-ish grey seamless steel) Here again, I am initially leaning towards a cultured stone. Something similar to this

stone

But then I got to thinking about it more – and it is really in and popular right now, but it is timeless or is it trendy? So, then I start leaning more towards the brick option. Because brick is timeless, right? Brick has been around for a really really long time. So, we go and look at brick. These were our top three alongside something that I am assuming will be a similar greyish color that the siding will be.

brick

Right now I’m in a toss-up between Castlewood and Harbourtown. And it really is crazy how much the color of the mortar affects the look of the brick!

And, we have to decide what we are going to do with the chimney – are we going to side it or brick/stone it? I just don’t know!

I’m back to that place of feeling completely unprepared to make decisions because you have to think SO far in advance! Any advice for us? Are we crazy for doing a stove instead of a fireplace? Should we just do the whole house in steel siding and forget the brick/stone? Are we looking at things the wrong way?! Help!

Iditarod Time!

Standard

Do any of you follow the Iditarod? If not, you should. It is one crazy amazing race!

It started this past Sunday and let me tell you – things are getting intense already! My favorite musher, Martin Buser has become the talk of the race, taking his 24 hour break extremely early on, only 3 days into it! Things are getting crazy and nobody knows what to expect now! He went into Rohn (which is 188 miles into the race) in first place and with a huge lead, already 8 hours ahead and after their rest, they are in 50th. But now his team is back on the trail and I just can’t wait to see how this is all going to play out – they’ve got 810 miles left to go.

Can you believe that?! These mushers and doggies are CRA-ZY!

Who is your favorite to win?
